Greetings from Singapore!
I am Peifang, a Ph.D. student in Mechanical Engineering from Nanyang Technological University. I am exploring methods to 3D print calcium-based bioceramics with high fracture toughness.
Singapore is a small tropical island-state, just north of the equator, with a population of ~6 million. A Ph.D. program here typically takes 4 years to complete. I hope to get to visit U.S. for the first time when I present at an MRS Meeting after I complete my qualifying exam.
Over here, daily life has gone through some adjustments. We wear masks everywhere except at home and during exercise. Tables are spaced out further apart in restaurants. We use a phone app to scan QR codes at entrances to buildings, shops, labs etc for contact tracing. Some people take turns to work from home half the time. Many events are held online instead. Yet the hustle and bustle of Singapore goes on. As usual, I'll have breakfast at the nearby bustling food center and take the public transport to school.
Or I'll stay at home next week, make a warm cup of honey drink, and plug in my earphones. Stay tuned with me, to the virtual Fall 2020 MRS Meeting.
