Hi from Matthew!

Hi y'all! I'm Matthew, and I'm a PhD student in materials science and engineering at the University of Virginia. I study ways to make graphene from graphite (AKA your pencil lead) and how to incorporate it into other materials. I work with Dr. David Green, who studies nanoparticles and their incorporation into composites and colloids, and I joined his lab when he was interested in studying carbon nanomaterials in those systems. I love hearing about all other kinds of research, so you might see me all over MRS.

This is my second MRS meeting, and I just went to my first last November. Doing two in the same year may be a lot, but I was really interested in coming to the Spring 2018 meeting when I saw an entire symposium that ties in really well to my dissertation and I knew I wanted to get to meet other researchers doing work closely related to what I'm studying. (More on that symposium later) I enjoy being in MRS because of how interdisciplinary the society is, and at the Fall 2017 meeting I got to talks covering all kinds of materials I wanted to learn more about and to meet other graduate students. On Tuesday, I'll be giving a poster as part of Symposium NM08-Graphene Oxide Liquid Crystals and 2D Soft Material Systems and I'll be attending the earlier talks in that symposium for most of the day. You might also find me wandering around the soft matter symposia (like I said, I want to put my graphene in other materials) and the broader impact activities throughout MRS.

Outside of lab, you might find me busy with the Science Policy Initiative at UVA, the Graduate Engineering Student Council, or chatting about anything at UVA's oldest literary society. I'll be livetweeting my experiences at the meeting @MatSciMatt, so feel free to follow me and you can also check out my other science and research communication work there.
